Welcome to the swamp

I have a confession: Swamp Boy isn’t just about swamps. It’s not just about bogs, fens, and the many other wetland types that dampen our planet. Swamp Boy is an environmental newsletter that features independent journalism, interviews, essays, and more. Most of my writing focuses on my home state of North Carolina. Some of my writing takes place in swamps.

I spend a lot of time holding my microphone up to trees, streams, and even office vents (they’re louder than you think, especially when you’re interviewing). Like a sound-starved goblin, I’m lurking in fields or on the side of the road, waving my shotgun mic around and scooping up every sound I can get my grubby hands on.

Whenever I can, I want to share those sounds with you. Swamp Boy is a playground to explore and test new audio storytelling techniques.

An Independent Environmental Newsletter

Free from microplastics, PFAS, and corporate money

I started writing Swamp Boy as part of my master’s thesis project. I wanted to create an informal space to connect with readers and listeners over the environment. Swamp Boy also became a platform to try out new storytelling and audio production techniques.

Listen now

Interviews

Listen in to my conversations with experts in the field as we discuss news, politics, and the science of our natural world.

Storytelling

Environmental is about more than holding polluters accountable (but, let’s face it, that’s a pretty big part). Let’s explore the environment together!

Podcast

We’ll travel across the state and, in some cases, the world to hear from the people, places, and our nonhuman neighbors that inhabit this planet.
